SEO Basics for Founders: A Practical Guide
How search works, what to set up first, and the habits that bring steady organic traffic without chasing tricks.
Why SEO still matters for founders
Paid ads stop the moment you stop paying. Organic search keeps bringing in people who are actively looking for what you sell. For SMEs and startups in India and abroad, it is one of the few channels that compounds over time.
1) How search works: crawl, index, rank
- Crawl: search engine bots discover pages by following links and reading sitemaps. If a page is not linked anywhere and not in your sitemap, it may never be found.
- Index: discovered pages are analysed and stored. Pages blocked by
noindex, duplicates, or very thin pages may be left out. - Rank: for each search, the engine orders indexed pages by relevance, quality, usefulness and context such as the searcher's location and device.
2) Set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
These free tools show how search engines see your site.
Google Search Console
- Add a Domain property and verify it with a DNS TXT record so every subdomain and protocol is covered.
- Submit your XML sitemap under Sitemaps.
- Check the Pages report for indexing issues and use URL Inspection after publishing important pages.
Bing Webmaster Tools
- Import your site directly from Search Console to save time.
- Bing's index also feeds other search and AI experiences, so it is worth the few minutes.
3) Keyword research with search intent
Start from your customers, not from a tool. List the problems they have, the words they use, and the questions your sales team hears every week. Then validate those ideas with Google autocomplete, "People also ask", Search Console data and a keyword tool.
Match the intent behind each search
- Informational: "how to reduce cart abandonment". Answer with a guide or blog post.
- Commercial: "best ERP for small manufacturers". Answer with comparisons and case studies.
- Transactional: "hire Shopify developer". Answer with a service or product page.
Check the current top results before writing: if they are all guides, a sales page will struggle. Early on, prioritise specific phrases close to a purchase.
4) On-page SEO essentials
- Title tag: put the main topic first, keep it roughly 50–60 characters, and make it compelling to click.
- Meta description: summarise the page and its benefit in about 140–160 characters. It does not directly affect ranking, but it influences clicks.
- Headings: one H1 per page, then H2 and H3 in logical order so both readers and bots can scan the structure.
- URL: short, readable and lowercase, such as
/services/shopify-development. - Internal links: link related pages together with descriptive anchor text. Your most important pages should be reachable within a few clicks of the homepage.
5) Technical basics
- Speed and Core Web Vitals: aim for "good" LCP, INP and CLS scores in field data. Compress images, limit heavy scripts and use a CDN.
- Mobile-friendly: Google indexes the mobile version of your site, so it must contain the same content, links and structured data as desktop.
- XML sitemap: list only canonical, indexable URLs and keep it updated automatically.
- robots.txt: use it to guide crawlers, not to hide pages from the index. Never block CSS or JavaScript that pages need.
- Canonical tags: point duplicate or parameter URLs to the preferred version.
- Structured data: add schema such as
Organization,LocalBusiness,Product,BlogPostingandBreadcrumbList, and test it with Google's Rich Results Test.
6) Content and E-E-A-T
Google's guidelines describe E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness. For a founder, that translates into practical habits:
- Write from real experience: your process, pricing factors, mistakes you have seen, photos of actual work.
- Show who is behind the business with an About page, team bios and clear contact details.
- Build topic clusters: one in-depth pillar page supported by focused articles that link back to it.
- Earn mentions and links from industry associations, partners, suppliers and relevant publications.
AI tools can help with drafts, but have a knowledgeable person review everything you publish.
7) Local SEO and Google Business Profile
If you serve customers in specific areas, Google Business Profile is often the fastest visibility win.
- Claim and verify your profile, choose accurate primary and secondary categories, and add services.
- Keep your name, address and phone number (NAP) identical across your website and directories.
- Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to every review, positive or negative.
- Create a useful page for each service area you genuinely serve, not copy-paste location pages.
8) Visibility in AI search
Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot now answer many questions directly and cite sources. The good news: the same fundamentals apply.
- Answer common questions clearly in the first few sentences of a section, then add detail.
- Use descriptive headings, lists and tables that are easy to extract and quote.
- Check that your robots.txt does not accidentally block the search crawlers these tools use, such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, if you want to appear in their results.
- Keep brand facts consistent everywhere: services, locations, contact details and founders.
- Get mentioned on trusted third-party sites, because AI tools lean on sources they already trust.
9) Measuring results
- Search Console: impressions, clicks, CTR and queries per page. Rising impressions are an early sign of progress.
- GA4: organic sessions, engagement and, most importantly, key events such as form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks from organic traffic.

Frequently asked questions
How long does SEO take to show results?
It varies with your site's age, competition and how much useful content you publish. New pages can be indexed within days, but steady ranking and traffic growth usually takes several months of consistent work. Track impressions in Search Console first, because they tend to rise before clicks do.
Can I do SEO myself or do I need an agency?
Founders can handle the basics covered here: Search Console setup, clear titles, helpful content and a complete Google Business Profile. An agency or specialist becomes useful when you need technical fixes, content at scale, or a strategy for competitive keywords.
Do I need a blog for SEO?
Not always, but most businesses benefit from content that answers customer questions. Strong service, product and location pages come first. A blog or guides section then helps you cover informational searches and build topical depth.
How do I show up in AI Overviews and ChatGPT answers?
There is no separate trick. Make sure your pages are crawlable, answer questions clearly near the top, use structured data, and keep your business details consistent across the web. Being mentioned on reputable third-party sites also helps AI tools recognise your brand.
